Custom Art {Maine Lifestyle Photographer}

As part of every portrait session, you get a 90 minute ordering session with me, where I will help you to plan how you’d like to display your images in your home. When possible, I’m going to be sharing examples of real clients’ homes and what they’ve chosen to do with their photos. I hope that this will help to inspire you with ways that you can use your own photos as custom art in your home.

Here are some images of Angela and Pete’s home, showing how they’ve decorated their living room area with images from their daughter Maya’s newborn session. They also framed Maya’s newborn announcement in her nursery, and have a beautiful 10×10 on their dresser in their bedroom.

mayawalls1mayawall2mayawalls3If you are a previous or current client, I’d loooove to share your displays too! Just email me some photos and I’ll share them here as soon as I can.

Welcome, Garrett! {Maine newborn photographer}

Welcome Garrett! Remember Michelle and Marty’s maternity shoot? And before that, their wedding? My first wedding EVER? It is on beyond exciting for me to document this family as it grows, and today, the cherry on the cake: newborn Garrett! Today he is six days new, and his mommy and daddy are relishing every moment.

He is just sweetest little guy; he didn’t make a peep our whole session, patiently allowing us to change his position, change his blankets… he was just happy as a clam.

And need I mention… his hair! Adorable adorable adorable. Garrett was given a handmade Native American basket and baby blanket, Michelle had the idea to put Garret in there for some photos to pay tribute to his Native American heritage. And ohhh my gosh. Typically I am all for newborn photos in black and white, but those shots with the bright blanket are now among my all time favorites. To me he looks like an angel.

garrett1garrett3garrett4garrett2garrett5garrett6Michelle and Marty: I am elated for you and honored to be able to document the most important moments of your lives. You are going to be amazing parents!

Lucky Pups: Brian and Megan

This Saturday, Sooper Dogs in Saco hosted an adoption day to showcase some of the Lucky Pups looking for forever homes. I wanted to introduce you to two of them. If you are interested in meeting or adopting either of these pups, please contact me.

Brian is a four month old puppy– his mom was a lab and they think he may be mixed with a Catahoula or Aussie or Cattle Dog. He is so cute and sweet, and doing a great job learning his manners. He even got a turn in the kissing booth at Sooper Dogs, where you stop by anytime before Valentine’s Day and and get pic of yourself getting smooched with your pup. You’ll even see the rare pic of me, because I couldn’t not pick this guy up for a snuggle. (Thanks Meg for taking over the camera for me while I snuggled with him!)

Now meet Megan. Megan is a one year old hound / Shepherd or even Rottweiler mix. She is so sweet and doing a great job with her foster family. She is so well mannered and did a great job meeting new people and dogs at the event this Saturday. I love the last photo of Megan, where she is looking out the window, just waiting for her forever family to come and pick her up!

happy baby {Maine children’s photographer}

This morning baby Andrew and his mom came over for their ordering session– since only two weeks ago he’s learned to sit completely on his own! He was all smiles so of course I had to whip out the camera for just one shot. Ok, three. He’s just too cute.

Let’s do something to help.

hhlogosmall

Since the morning that I heard about the earthquake on NPR, my heart has felt wrenched and powerless. I’ve been thinking and thinking of how to help out, and quite by accident came up with the solution. One of my favorite photography blogs, Pinkle Toes of Austin, TX created the Helping Hearts project and is inviting photographers to follow suit.

So here’s what I’m doing to help, and I need your help too. Here’s the deal:

You and your sweetheart (be it baby, doggy, husband, sister, etc etc etc) could win a love pics photo session!

  • Winner will receive all the benefits of a Lifestyle Photo Session: 1-2 hours of shooting time on location, 20-25 fully processed images in an online gallery and a 90 minute ordering session with me (prints not included) to discuss the display of your photos.
  • Winner will also receive two Accordion Books - my  newest product - in their choice of colors. That’s one for you and one for your hunny!

How to win:

  • Make a MINIMUM donation of $10 to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund or to the Humane Society’s Disaster Relief Fund.
  • Forward a copy of your receipt to nicole@nmdphotography.com
  • Donation receipt must be dated between 1.26.10 and 2.13.10.
  • All entries must be RECEIVED by midnight (Eastern time) on February 13th.
  • Winner will be drawn at random and announced on Valentine’s Day, February 14th.
  • You can enter as many times as you’d like, but each entry must be the minimum $10 donation.

Other details:

  • Session participants must sign a model release.
  • Session must within a 1 hour drive of South Berwick, Maine, and must be scheduled before March 31st.
  • If the winner does not claim his/her prize by Feb. 16th or cannot claim the prize, then another winner will be drawn.
  • This program is not sponsored or promoted by the American Red Cross or the Humane Society and we are not receiving anything in return for this effort.

And of course, a little photo lovin’ from 2009 to get you in the mood…

tub time! {Maine baby photographer}

Maya is nine weeks old already! Angela and I stayed home and hung out with Maya while the guys went skiing for the day. What a treat for all of us. Watching Ang and Maya together is simply amazing.

photography in real life

Last night I journeyed out into the winter-ness and attended a networking meeting for small business owners in my town, and as I introduced myself, I talked a bit about my style of shooting. I ended up talking a bit about my style how my goal is always to capture the spirit and personality of my subject. I talked about how much I dreaded picture day when I was a kid, I hated how they’d hold up that corny stuffed animal and try to trick me into laughing. I felt self-conscious. I felt belittled and shy.

Then today I was working more on editing the B family’s photos from last weekend, and there it was again; sometimes (ok almost always) my favorite shots come when we’re taking a “break.” Here we put the teething Andrew into his jumpey thing to chill out and Michael took a break for some goldfish. And yet. They’re being real. This is their life. These are the moments I’m most excited and honored to capture.

sunday morning in maine {Maine family photographer}

While Mother Nature began cooking up her latest storm up here in Maine, I spent a couple of hours at the B family home to play, read books, and of course, take photos! They are a young, fun, and colorful family and I had such a good time playing with their little guys, Michael (who is four) and Andrew (who is six months). Two of my favorite ages to photograph! Both boys have the cutest bedrooms and I think in Michael I may have found my new best friend! His is a sweet, friendly, outgoing boy. His poor baby brother was struggling with teething, but by the end of the session he seemed to feel better and we we able to coax a smile or two out of him!

Jamie, Leigh, Michael and Andrew: thank you so much for welcoming me into your home! I am hard at work editing your photos, but here are a few of my favorites to tide you over until next week.

afternoon stretch

Now that January is here, my husband and I do a role reversal: he’s the one gone every Saturday (to the ski slopes) and I’m the one home alone. So far I’ve been pretty productive on said days, getting the house cleaned up from the week, working on new marketing materials, running in the frreeeezing cold, playing with Mr. Tucker, and even doing domestic things like knitting and baking. Today I even installed a gallery of eight mounted photos to one big wall in my home studio, but I’m waiting until the other one is done to reveal it to you.

Hopefully, you are not “Tuckered out” by now (haha I’ve been dying to throw that in there!)– here he is today after waking up from a nap in the sun.

tucker-stretch-after

tuckerstretch-beforeIt was nice to have a few minutes to play with this image in PhotoShop– I nearly deleted it upon first glance and now I’m so glad that I didn’t. Here’s the original, nearly nixed, shot on the left.

For those who are curious: I painted in the background with the black from the top left. I then used the Flashlight filter to bring the focus to his face, then decided it’d be a better composition in square, and I fiddled with the size and placement for a bit. I had added a lens flare which created a very Zen yoga dog thing, but then I decided I liked the plain black better.

Shot with my Nikon d700 with 11-16 Tokina (I had just been taking pics of my new wall display) on A at 3.5, ISO 200.
