Smile Because It Happened {Maine Lifestyle Photographer}

“Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” -Dr. Seuss, as quoted by my stepdad Paul, at his speech at graduation this weekend. Paul is retiring after 35 years of working as a coach, an English teacher, a guidance counselor, and Director of Guidance at our local high school. But that doesn’t really begin to sum up all that he has done for the school and mostly for the thousands of students whose lives he’s touched. Most (including Paul) were in tears by the end of his speech.

Paul’s mom, my Memere, took Paul’s “VIP” chair in front of the fence for a better view. I was able to weasel may way up to the fence to see for myself. It was a packed scene. Even without photographing the crowd, I hope that I captured the energy and cheers that hundreds of listeners had for Paul. I was so proud, I wanted to jump up and yell “Hey! That’s my dad!” to all of the people in the crowd. Instead I hunkered down with my camera : )
